This is what some celebrations of our learners looked like this week:

All students make growth in Numeracy -number.
To progress our teaching in Mathematics that will ultimately support learners to progress, this week we engaged in a three hour twilight meeting with a Mathematics focus.
Our visitin
g expert Russell McCartney led the first hour with the teachers engaging in the MAKE, SAY, WRITE and DO model. The new resource - bead strings – were the manipulatives of the lesson.
To begin we were given the challenge of ‘First to 60.’ We used the five pattern bead strings. The rules of the game were to add in increments of five or ten only, taking turns to each decide what each would add. We were then challenged to work out if there were ‘trap’ numbers, numbers that trapped your opponent, resulting in a win for yourself.
What was the point of the exercise? One learning experience can provide access and continued learning for all students. What does this mean you might see in a classroom? You may see the same resource and game being used over a period of a week. With one learning experience the students have mastered the rules and understandings of the game and the mathematical learning occurs. You may have experienced a new card game and the first time you play is about learning the game and rules, after that the thinking and strategy can occur. The learning experiences we provide at St Patrick’s are of a similar thinking. A lot of mathematical thinking and processing can occur when the mechanics of the process are taken care of.
Learning continued with opportunities to engage in the work of mathematicians as we ask our students to do each day. Followed by the continued process of refining our mathematics policy for St Pat’s known as the Agreed Practice in Mathematics.
I encourage you to make bead strings with your child at home. You can use a long shoelace and coloured beads. Simply thread five of one colour and five of another coloured beads on the shoe lace, continue until you have a total of 80. We will be using this resource across the school in the coming weeks and your child will be able to ‘play’ some maths games at home and show you their growing mathematical thinking at the same time.
Last Thursday we held the Southern Region Athletics Carnival in almost spring like conditions. Given the time of year we have had some absolutely dreadful weather in the past.
Over 300 children travelled from our 6 southern region schools to compete for places in the Southern Region Team. Batehaven is our largest school and usually wins the pointscore trophy. This year competition was very close with Batehaven beating Moruya by only one point.
St Pat's have 15 children selected in the team and they will travel to Canberra on Thursday 22nd August.
Congratulations to the following children particularly Kirra Seenan who was named 11yr girl individual champion. Well done Kirra, Jaxson Dibley, Daniel Clarke, Sam Johnstone, Hugo Spitzer, Lachlan Marks, Isabella Ingraham, Ella Taylor, Jontae and Lincoln Thompson, Kai Schrader, Matilda Cox, Drew Duncan, Jack Taylor and Braith Taylor. Parents of these children are reminded that they need to go online to register.
Kylie only had a small band of helpers at the BBQ, but a big thank you to those who turned up to help and to those who cooked some goodies at home.
On Wednesday, our Koori students travelled to Broulee to attend the Yuin Banaan, a cultural festival with lots of different activities and stalls. We enjoyed learning new Indigenous dances and basket weaving skills. We also helped create a mural with ACT NAIDOC artist of the year, Buddy, and were gifted this piece to display at St. Pat’s.

DMMSG provides high quality, on-site, general dental care services to children aged 2-17 years.
Under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), funded by the Australian Federal Government, our services are at no cost to eligible students. We can provide dental services to eligible children who are covered under the Medicare scheme.
We provide children with essential dental treatment & education using the latest technology in portable dental units.
Our program involves:
- Dental education about oral hygiene and the importance of maintaining great oral health
- Comprehensive oral examination
- Scale, polish and clean
- Topical application of Tooth Mousse (decay prevention)
To be eligible for CDBS:
- Children must be aged between 2 to 17 years old
- Must be enrolled in Medicare
- The family must receive Family Tax Benefit Part A
If the child is NOT eligible for CDBS they:
- Can participate in the dental education
- Can receive the Dental Service at a discounted rate of $79.00
- If requested receipt can be given to claim on private health insurance.

Thank you to families who have paid their school fees. Fees are due by Friday 16th August, unless prior arrangements have been made.
An update on cash at the canteen. Canteen will accept cash for recess as at times, depending on volunteer helpers, we will be having special recess treats that aren’t on the menu (This coming Monday we will be having pasta for 50c). We do prefer that you order menu items through Qkr eg. muffins and chips.
