Dear Parents and Carers,
Literacy: Our school journey in developing literacy for all students has had a strong focus on rich literature, and the development of libraries in every classroom. In recent weeks a number of our teachers have undertaken the intense 2 day training for teaching the Initialit program. Initialit is a synthetic phonic program. Synthetic phonics along with rich literature supports strong literacy development. As part of our Catholic Education Canberra and Goulburn system wide Catalyst program we are implementing Initialit in the K-2 classrooms at St Patrick’s in 2021. We have taken a step forward by beginning the program with our Kinder students in Term 4 this year.
Reading: Our school expectation for homework is that each child reads each day. Please schedule time with your child to help them meet this expectation. It is very beneficial for children to have 3 reading experiences as they develop their reading skill.
1 – Read to self
2 – Read to another
3 – Be read to.
What is your favourite book? Take some time to tell your children what you like to read!
What is your favourite quote about reading?
A piece of advice that I believe is worth repeating is that for children to grow a positive attitude about reading they need to see people valuing - and engaging in reading. Seeing role models engaging purposefully in reading is really positive and powerful. Families can do something simple like scheduling a reading time (eg. once per week) where everyone is engaged in reading. Maybe this weekend there will be time to relax and read?
Blessings

CELEBRATIONS OF LEARNING
Although Covid times have created many challenges for us, technology creates many solutions too. In the coming weeks all parents can expect all students to share their Celebration of Learning via See Saw.
What a wonderful opportunity for you to see the amazing learning that your child has been engaged in at school. These snap shots are just a springboard, I can honestly say from experience. once you get them started, take a seat because children just want to share. Do you remember as a child saying “Mum, look at me, watch this” There is nothing more endearing than a child wanting the attention of their parent.
My son is 24 and to this day he will ring and say “ Mum, guess what I got 85% for my assignment, pretty cool hey” translated, mum, look at me, I love you and still desire your affirmation.
Our students, your children are precious and only children for a little while, treasure every moment.

Kinder Orientation
This week we had our last Kinder Orientation. Students participated in a morning circle, made a green sheep and received a St Pat's Prayer Book.
Thank you to the families who have donated to the Christmas hampers, they are starting to fill up! Any further donations can be brought to the school office.
150th Pavers
We are placing a second order of 150th pavers. If you did not purchase a paver last year or would like to purchase another paver please go to Skoolbag for the order form.
Drink Bottles
It is imperative that your child brings a drink bottle to school each day. Due to recent Covid-19 restrictions there are no bubblers available and the students must provide their own drink bottle.
School Uniforms – Hats
Please ensure that your child brings their hat to school, as they are required to wear a hat to play outside. Hats can be purchased on Qkr!
