VISIT TO THE BEGA LIBRARY BY OUR JUNIOR CLASSES

To celebrate Book Week next week our Junior classes will be visiting the Bega Library on Thursday. Anne from Bega Library said, "It was great to hear that St Pats School children could once again visit Bega Library for Book Week. We are also keen for them to visit at anytime. If any children have library cards and wish to borrow on the day could they be encouraged to bring their cards along on the day. As that would be easier for staff to issue books"

Progress vs. Achievement

In education, the words "achievement" and "progress" are often used interchangeably. However, their meanings are very different.

Achievement is measured by students' performance at a single point in time and how well those students perform against a standard. Achievement has typically been measured by students' performance on national tests (such as NAPLAN) and how well students perform in relation to national and state standards and the "bar" established for proficiency.

Progress is measured by how much "gain" or "growth" students make over time (i.e., year-to-year, semester-to-semester, term to term etc.). One way to think of academic progress is in terms of a child's growth chart. A growth chart shows a child's height at age two, three, etc. These data points can be plotted to display that child's physical growth over a specific period of time.

By measuring students’ academic achievement and progress, schools will have a more robust, comprehensive picture of their effectiveness in raising student performance.

Here are some students celebrating progress in learning and enacting the St. Pat's characteristics such as persistence, creativity, cooperation, confidence and resilience. These students received a Red Pillar Sticker for Looking into Thinking.

Over the next weeks at St. Pat's we will begin the next phase of tracking student progress in Mathematics and Reading using our assessment tools and presenting students who demonstrate progress with a gold or silver sticker. If students make 20% or more above expected growth they will receive a gold sticker and be commended at assembly for this learning.
